What is a social media handle?
- A social media handle is your unique identifier (username) on a social network, typically what you’re “@-something” on platforms like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, etc.
- It’s different from your display name: the display name might be your full name (“Jane Doe”) whereas the handle might be @janedoe123.
- For business/brand accounts, the handle is the public username of the business profile, often tied to the company’s identity rather than an individual’s.
How do I find a social media handle?
Here are general guidelines you can apply across most platforms:
- Check consistency across platforms: If you know one handle, you can try to find the same or similar handle on other platforms (helps with brand/person verification).
- Search by name: Go to the platform and enter the person’s or company’s name in the search bar.
- Check profile URL or username field: On many platforms the handle is visible in the URL (e.g., instagram.com/username) or shown near the top of the profile.
- Check settings or profile information: For your own account or one you’re logged into, you can often open “Settings → Account → Username” to see exactly what the handle is.
- Copy directly: Once located, copy the handle exactly (including correct case, underscores, periods) because handles are precise identifiers.
